LAST BUT NOT LEAST...BINDINGS

I read a lot of blogs and look at a number of quilts. After all I am a confessed quilt junkie. Bindings seem to be an after thought when in reality the can make a real statement. It is another design opportunity. The last fabric choice for a project, although I have made a quilt based on the fabric I chose for the binding. Don't be afraid of making bias bindings when the fabric design will allow it. Bias is the longest lasting of the techniques and your corners miter like a dream. Look at antique quilts and you will see the aging process is significant on the bindings. There are lots of tools out to help make the process easier. I usually cut my width at 2 1/2 inches. The black and red shown is extra wide and finished at 2 1/2 .

You are so right Frances. It is the last fabric chosen on the quilt and just as important as the first.

One of my favorite fabrics to choose for bindings is one that has stripes, or what ends up looking like stripes, when it's sewn on. It looks like you have similar taste in that, based on the photo.

I always feel like I have better success with bias binding vs making my binding on the straight of grain. It always lays better and sews up better for me. I am not sure why,but it does. And I hate the store bought stuff! I HAVE to make my own. And you are so right! Make it interesting!

Yep, it can really add an exclamation point to your quilt. It's actually one of my favorite parts of making a quilt. Maybe because it means we're close to FINISHED!
