Now that you've had a week to practice the basic heart shaped leaf, lets try something new. The easiest way to increase your stitch repertoire is to make slight changes to a particular stitch. Adding what I call an "element" changes the personality and appears totally different. This element is a simple spiral that is created instead to the vein. Spiral in the corner leaving enough room to spiral out.

Finished my big project; so I'm going to practice over the weekend.
You got me....I just thought the leaf was it! I love spirals so, this is perfect for me to try. Thanks.
Thank you Frances! You should see my mess! I was doing the spiral to try and get to a spot to make my leaf!!!! :o( Need to blog my mess, hoping I'm not the only one on shaky ground! I'm having a blast tho! Thank you, Kim C ^i^

This design is very cute! I'll start practicing now! Sorry but I have trouble understanding the video because I don't know English very well! Could you tell me which threads are those that you see in the video? Thank you! :)

Your leaves are BEAUTIFUL!!! No wonder you're the teacher!!! =]
Love this. It is on my list to do tomorrow. Thanks.
This is beautiful! I'm still practicing on my leaves!
Loving this leaf....when you come out of the spiral, are you going to make another stitch or are you completing the leaf? Your example is so good I can't tell.... thanks!
I love the spiral inside the leaf! Thank you for showing us that!
ahilychlowalready making a lot of my letter was not even spiral thank you:)
Thank you for this variation, it looks really attractive. You are being so generous, loving the discipline of keeping up the practice even when I have no project to quilt at the moment. Great start to the FMQ series.
Thanks so much for sharing. I love the spiral, it will give me something to more to practice while I keep trying leaves this month.
Thanks so much for the ongoing tutorial this month! Will try the spiral version tomorrow.

Thanks for adding the variation. I am having a lot of fun with it.
I am going to have to try that one next.
Dear Francis, thank you very much for the January tutorial. I love leaves!
I have an important question: I would not like actually sandwich much turn while quilten. I can turn a small project, but if I sew - for example – a great project like a bedspread or so, then not. As you can see at the two photos on my blog, the result is very different. If I do not turn, the sheets become creepy. If I turn, some less. ; -). Thanks you for an answer.
Many greetings from Nuremberg
Love it...just in time for Valentine's. Thanks, as always, for your terrific ideas.
Thank you so much for starting us off with this challenge. I am getting better with the leaf motif. I am excited to try the spiral, too.
Your blog page is incredibly awesome.
i flipping love this!!
I'm joining the 2012 FMQ Challenge late in the game, and just now watched your video tutorial for January. I love the leaves, especially this spiral version and I can't wait to try it out for myself!
One question -- I'm so intrigued that you do NOT wear gloves, because I have had teachers tell me I MUST wear them and I hate them SO much... If you don't wear gloves, is there something else you're doing or using to help you grip the quilt for FMQ?
